A story thousands of years old

Scroll through some of the chapters that shaped the subcontinent.

Once one land

For long stretches of history these regions shared rulers, rivers, trade routes and culture. Choose a year to see how the political map changed.

Partition in 1947 was one of the largest migrations in human history and caused immense loss and suffering on all sides. Yet the peoples of the subcontinent still share languages, music, cuisine, poetry and a love for cricket. Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bhutan were never part of British India, but are close neighbours in the same cultural world.
